Naomi Lam, MD

Dr. Lam was born in Oakland, California, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area.   Looking back, her close relationship with my paternal grandmother, who practiced a combination of Western and traditional Chinese medicine in the rural southern China of the 1940's and '50's, provided her first exposure to integrative medicine.  As an undergraduate, Dr. Lam studied molecular biology at Stanford and almost followed a path toward a basic science degree, but changed her mind at the last minute and decided to pursue medicine instead.  Dr. Lam was fortunate to encounter an amazing mentor in the Department of Psychiatry at Tufts University, who nurtured her budding identity as a mind-body doctor.  During her adult psychiatry residency at UC San Francisco, she developed a great interest in transpersonal psychology and spirituality as they relate to mental health and general wellbeing.

Since graduating in 2002, Dr. Lam has been practicing adult psychiatry in the San Francisco community. In 2006, she was certified in medical acupuncture.  Currently, Dr. Lam works part time at a nonprofit organization, where her clinical caseload is severely mentally ill and indigent. She also works and teaches at UCSF's Osher Center for Integrative Medicine, where she is an assistant clinical professor in the department of psychiatry.
