Set atop a healing mesa and overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine (SCIM) blends medical expertise with evidence-based complementary therapies and the most advanced technology for early detection and diagnosis, supporting patients on a lifetime journey of wellness through the powers of body, mind, and spirit.

Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine was founded in 1999 as part of the Scripps Health System in San Diego, California, and spearheaded by cardiologist Erminia Guarneri, MD, and Rauni Prittinen King, RN.  It is guided by the philosophy that healing starts from within.

While originally conceived to serve patients with cardiovascular disease, patients with a variety of conditions soon began requesting integrative, holistic care.  As a result, the center’s services expanded. Today Scripps Center of Integrative Medicine provides a full spectrum of care for patients living with health challenges such as cancer, chronic pain, cardiac disease, and obesity.

Provided under the direction of skilled physicians, SCIM’s major clinical services address a mind-body-spirit approach to lifestyle change.  The center’s groundbreaking, personalized programs change lives through a full spectrum of services that help patients prevent, reverse and treat chronic health problems, and reclaim wellness and vitality.

Approximately 2,500 patients visit the center each month for expert care.  Many others attend its physician lectures, educational offerings, cooking and exercise classes and support groups.

An overview of the accomplishments of the center since its founding 12 years ago:

  • The Dickinson & Gooding Center for Early Detection, established in 2004, offers the latest in medical scanning technology for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.  It is home to a 64-slice CT/PET scanner, SPECT imaging, stress testing and 3D echocardiography.
  • The integrative cardiology program offers cardiology consultations, EECP (enhanced external counterpulsation), advanced lipid management, and preoperative and postoperative surgical healing support for stress and pain reduction.
  • A unique, intensive 12-week lifestyle change program embraces the mind-body-spirit approach, providing participants with all the tools they need to prevent and reverse cardiovascular disease, from personalized nutrition and cooking instruction to exercise training and stress management techniques.  In addition, SCIM provides a traditional cardiac rehabilitation exercise program.
  • The center is home to a full complement of integrative pain management modalities, including acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, hypnosis and Healing Touch.  The psychological aspects of pain, anxiety and stress are addressed through multiple ongoing classes and programs including yoga, meditation, mindfulness-based stress reduction and group support.
  • The Center for Life Enhancement includes a full service fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, an outdoor heated lap pool, personal trainers and a full spectrum of fitness classes that serve more than 800 members.
  • The center convenes three important national professional education conferences for health care providers: the Annual Science and Clinical Application of Integrative Holistic Medicine Conference; the Annual Integrative and Holistic Nursing Conference: Bringing Healing to You and Your Patients; and the Annual Natural Supplements: An Evidence-Based Update.
  • The center’s director, Erminia Guarneri, MD, is a nationally recognized leader in integrative medicine, the author of the best-selling book, The Heart Speaks, and the chair of the Bravewell Clinical Network.
